An Uncertain Popularity

"Look, ma! The clothes have no emperor!"

By: Bryan Zepp Jamieson  Zepp's Political Commentary

For a guy who has the highest or second highest job approval ratings in history (78% to 90% depending on who is polling), Putsch sure acts defensive.

First, there is the matter of Clinton. Without really meaning to, Clinton showed up Putsch pretty badly in the aftermath of the New York disaster. Clinton came to Manhattan and hugged people and said the right things and was just generally Clinton at his very best. Putsch dragged in a few days later, already smarting from questions about just what he thought he was doing the day of the attacks, and shouted unusually empty homilies at the firefighters and cops who were working on the wreckage. No hugs for the kids, not from this silver-spoon boy. Clinton, carefully striving not to put Putsch in a bad light or second guess him in any way, has so embarrassed the White House with his clear leadership superiority that they have descended to asking the tv networks to start downplaying Clinton.

Old-Time Religion

By: Chris Floyd  The Moscow Times

You will doubtless be comforted to know that Generalissimo Bush - just like Osama bin Laden, Mullah Omar of the Taliban, Adolf Hitler, Vlad the Impaler, Attila the Hun, Hammurabi of Babylon, and Ug-Ug, the Neanderthal tribal chieftain - believes he has been chosen by God to lead his people into war.

Bush's close friends say the atrocity has given the Generalissimo "a reason for being", The New York Times reports. Mark McKinnon, a senior campaign adviser, says Bush feels the war "is the country's destiny - and his destiny". Says another, unidentified pal: "I think, in his frame, this is what God has asked him to do" - a conviction, we're told, "informed and shaped by the president's own strain of Christianity".

During a White House meeting last week, one Christian-strained mullah told Bush it was "God's plan" that the Generalissimo was enthroned in power at such a propitious time. Quietly, firmly - and probably not smirking at all - Bush replied: "I accept the responsibility".

So let's get the theology straight here: It was "God's plan" to murder 6,000 innocent people in the most horrendous way possible just so George W. Bush could "find himself" and "fulfill his destiny"?

Lord have mercy on us all.

Open your Windows WordPad program or MSWord or any program that lets you pick fonts. Type 'NYC' without the quotes (NYC stands for New York City), 'hi-lite' the letters and enlarge them to 48 points, and you get:

NYC - Times New Roman

Now keep them 'hi-lited' and change the font to Webdings, and you get:

NYC - Webdings

I (eye) Love (heart) New York (city skyline)

Now change the font to Wingdings, and you get:

Not in America?

From: Madison

One of the running debates my husband and I have had over many years has been whether a type of Nazi Germany could ever happen here. I have maintained that it could not because we have an aggressively free press that prides itself on its honor, and on its relentless pursuit of true facts.

Bash the Arabs and Clobber the Left

By: Ben Fritz and Brendan Nyhan

When a commentator like Ann Coulter calls for the mass deportation of all Muslim non-citizens from "suspect countries", it is tempting to simply write her off as an extremist light years off her rocker. But as we look deeper at the increasingly venomous tirades of pundits since September 11, it becomes clear that the trend toward aggressive political jargon has accelerated in the wake of the attacks. As a result, public discourse is spiraling to new levels of illogic as the nation moves toward war.

Terrorism and the Four Freedoms

By: Doris "Granny D" Haddock  AlterNet

This is not a time for all good Americans to forget their political differences and rally behind the man in the White House. The man in the White House should apologize for the most serious breach of internal security in the nation's history, not disguise his failure in calls for war. Can he hope that the fiery explosions in New York and Washington and Pennsylvania will be more acceptable to us if they are placed in a larger context of explosions of our own making? I do not rally around that idea. It is "wag the dog" taken to an extreme level, for he is not covering up his failure with a fake war, but with a real one.

He has taken every opportunity to make the world less safe, first in North Korea and then in the Mideast and in Russia and in China. He needs a dangerous world to sell his military vision of the future. He is getting it. We must not go along with him.

13 Questions for Bush about
America's Anti-terrorism Crusade

By: Martin A. Lee  AlterNet

Mainstream journalists in the United States often function more like a fourth branch of government than a feisty fourth estate. If anything, the patterns of media bias that characterize sycophantic reporting in "peacetime" are amplified during a war or a national security crisis.

If we had an aggressive, independent press corps, it might ask President Bush a few of these questions...

Osama the Bomb'a

Osama Caught!

Multi-billionaire Osama bin Laden was arrested yesterday while working his night job at a local 7-11.

Two undercover officers, posing as teenagers, took Osama into custody after he sold them a pack of cigarettes and a 'twelve-pack' of beer.

When asked why he would do something that stupid, he replied, "I use all of the tools provided to me by Allah to corrupt and destroy the vile children of the Satan-state America".

The EVIL Bush Family Empire

From: Judicial Watch (they eat their own ya' know)

"This conflict of interest has now turned into a scandal. The idea of the President's father, an ex-president himself, doing business with a company under investigation by the FBI in the terror attacks of September 11 is horrible. President Bush should not ask, but demand, that his father pull out of the Carlyle Group", stated Judicial Watch Chairman and General Counsel Larry Klayman.

Bin Laden's Past Words Revisited

Poverty Rate Down to 11.3%

The U.S. poverty rate decreased to 11.3% of the population last year, its lowest level since 1974, the Census Bureau reported Tuesday (9/18/01).

Meanwhile, median household income leveled off at $42,148 in 2000, after increasing for much of the 1990s. Accounting for inflation, the median household income fell slightly from the record high of $42,187 in 1999.

Nationwide, 31.1 million Americans lived in poverty, down from 32.3 million, or 11.8% of the population in 1999.

"The drop in the poverty rate belongs to a larger story of economic recovery since the last recession", said Daniel Weinberg, chief of the bureau's division of housing and household economics statistics. "Poverty rates tend to peak soon after a recession."

Analysts, though, have cautioned not to consider these figures an up-to-date barometer of the country's financial health.

The figures come from a survey of 50,000 households taken in March and relate to questions about income and poverty status for 2000. As a result, the survey would not reflect recent turmoil in the economy.

The record low poverty rate was 11.1%, set in 1973.

Since 1993, Weinberg said, poverty rates have also declined along most racial, ethnic and age groups.

The poverty rate for Americans under 18 was 16.2%, down for the third straight year, the bureau said. Even so, people under 18 still had a higher poverty rate than those in any other age group.

The poverty threshold differs by the size of the household. For instance, in 2000, a family of four was considered to be impoverished if the household earned $17,603 or less a year.

Median income refers to the point at which half of households earn more and half earn less. The last time there was a decrease in median household income was in 1992-93.

Still, Weinberg stressed that the latest decrease in overall median household income was not statistically significant.

Other findings:

The poverty rate of 22.1% for blacks set a record low, though it still lagged far behind that of non-Hispanic whites (7.5%). The median income for black households was $30,439, also a high.

For the first time in four years, men working full time year-round experienced a decline in real median earnings, from $37,701 in 1999 to $37,339 in 2000. Earnings for women increased slightly to $27,355.
